Vehera Benda Kutiya Ancient Temple

“Kuda Ratmale” was the name of the village, which now named as Shrawasthipura. And “Vehera Benda Gala” means “Stupa built on the rock”.

This temple has some archaeological values. Mostly popular for the script written in a rock in this place which claimed to be old as the temple.  This rock script was known to be “Kuda Rthmale Veherabendagala Rock script”, and believed to be written in around 5-6 Centuries A.D.  And this rock script gives us plenty of solid evidence on ancient activities on this place.  According to the script, 1500 years back this sacred place had given shelter to many monks  including “Arhaths (enlightened ones)“ who had got plenty of attention from the kings at that time.

At Present days, Ven. Welisara Jinawansha Tissa Thero had re-established & re-developed this sacred place back to its old glorious days. For tremendous effort he has given to re-develop this hidden sacred land as well as the 4 surrounding villages, he has offered with the titles of “Asarana Sarana (the one who support for the needy)”. Long time back this title was given for a pioneer monk who dedicated life for others well being and Ven. Tissa Thero is the recent time receiver of this honor.  He is also the “Chief incumbent of North Central Province”.  Ven. Bhikku has restored and developed the 40 acre land belong to temple premises to a Bio Diversity hot spot.  Because of the great effort made by Ven.Tissa Thero, this place is now attracting the attention of many local & international environmentalists.
